Seven Creative Tips to Make Your Home Decor Look Fabulous

Designing your home is something that takes a lot of time and careful consideration. There is just so much home decor ideas to consider: space planning, colors, materials, creative elements and the overall atmosphere that you want to live in. Planning one aspect at a time easily feels doable but when you consider the bigger picture it can all become a bit overwhelming and complicated.

The good news is sometimes details have a big impact! Ahead are some inexpensive and creative home decor ideas that, when made, will bring that “Je ne sais quoi”, the extra touch that will help make your home look fabulous.

Tip N°1 - Whenever you are choosing wall colors for a room that doesn't have a lot of natural light in it, resist the temptation to “liven” it up with fancy colors and choose lighter, natural tones. A lighter colored wall will distribute light around a room more evenly giving the room a brighter and larger feel to it than if you use dark or bright colors that will absorb the light.

Tip N°2 - Use brightly colored or printed fabrics to add a bit of life to a drab room. Pillows and throws are a fantastically easy and cheap way to change or add instant appeal and character to an otherwise boring room. If you don’t have the means to invest in a complete renovation, a few well-spent dollars on fabrics will make a radical difference!

You can then continue the theme by adding other home decor accessories or lighting elements featuring the same color tones that will tie the room together and add coherence to the overall feel.

Tip N°3 - If like me you can’t afford fine art, a good interior design idea is to use giant creative pictures of your family.  Don’t go all out hanging pictures of your kids and family everywhere because that’s just creepy, but select a few that are in the tones and spirit you are seeking to give the room and you’ll find that it’s not only very effective creatively but that being surrounded by your loved ones will help to bring a very positive and personalized ambiance to the room.

Tips N°4 - Invest in a pot of paint.  It’s amazing how far a pot of paint and a paintbrush can go! Personally, when I feel I want a change in my home or if I simply want it to feel fresh and new again, I go out and buy a pot of paint in the color of my mood and I repaint something.  It can be a piece of furniture, a wall, part of a wall or it can also be pots, a vase, the ceiling, a window frame or, to my husbands dismay, the floor...!

Tip N°5 – Plants are the perfect, affordable elements to brighten and decorate any home. Their sizes, colors and varieties are almost infinite.  They bring life and a sense of meaning into our homes not only because they are natural elements that need to be cared for but also because they are the reflection of our unique aesthetic tastes and desires.

Tip N°6 – That piece that you really fell in love with, can’t forget, and hesitate to buy because it’s not “in style” or “reasonable”... Buy it and never look back!

I don’t mean go crazy buying everything you like but if you absolutely love something that you know will make you happy , than go for it. Life is short and an average person spends at least half of their waking moments in their home. It’s vital to be surrounded by what makes us feel good and it’s very rare to stumble upon pieces that we feel are perfect for us.

Most of the time we furnish or decorate with items that we feel we “need” or are “reasonable” and that’s how so many interiors end up boring and with no spirit. So trust yourself! If it feels right, than it probably is!

Tip N°7 - Adopt a pet. I’m not joking! I’m a crazy animal lover it’s true but honestly, to me, a house is not a home if I’m not sharing it with at least one four legged friend preferably adopted from an animal shelter.  They bring joy, companionship and a sense of fulfillment that fill homes with life and beauty, the essential elements to any perfect interior.
